‘Stepwells: Poetry in Craft,’ curated by Anjana Somany, is a fascinating installation seen at Azad Maidan, Panjim, during the 10th Serendipity Arts Festival (12 – 21 December 2025).

In this painting, Trilok P Soni, a master artist of the Rajasthani Pichwai tradition, depicts stepwells in the distinctive style of Pichwai painting.

Gujarati Rabari embroidery — featuring chain and fishbone stitches, mirrors, appliqué and beads — is used to create stepwell strata representing soil, rock, groundwater, stone and architecture.

Inspired by the stepped wells of Gujarat and Rajasthan, this textile artwork features architectural forms created using the applique craft of Barmer, Rajasthan.

Like the stepwell itself, this installation invites reflection, offering a space to consider water as a shared, sacred resource while engaging with craft, architecture and dialogue.
