Historic win for Sinner: First Italian champion since 1976

Jannik Sinner won the Italian Open in Rome, and completed the Career Golden Masters

World No 1 Jannik Sinner clinched the Italian Open title in Rome with a straight-sets victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the final. The triumph made Sinner the first Italian man to win the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976.

The 24-year-old also achieved a major milestone by becoming only the second player in history, after Novak Djokovic, to complete the Career Golden Masters by winning all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles. Djokovic had completed the feat in 2018 at the age of 31.

The Rome title marked Sinner’s sixth consecutive Masters 1000 crown and the 10th Masters title of his career. After battling through a demanding semifinal against Daniil Medvedev, Sinner delivered a composed performance in the final, controlling rallies with strong baseline play and consistent shot-making.

Following the win, Sinner credited his fitness team for helping him maintain peak form throughout the season. Ruud, meanwhile, praised the Italian star’s remarkable run, calling his performances this year “extraordinary” and inspiring.

Novak Djokovic also congratulated Sinner on social media, writing on Instagram: “Welcome to the exclusive club, Jannik.”
